California based artist Squeak Carnwath has been an artist since childhood. Her often large-scale luminous paintings investigate the matter of being alive. She explores our daily routines; such as the act of waking up, going to our jobs, what we eat, and the act of breathing, through observation and counting. Carthwath states, “Art is evidence. Evidence of breathing in and breathing out; proof of human majesty.” It is in the sharing of this evidence that the gift lies.
Carnwath’s accomplishments have been recognized with numerous grants and awards, including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art’s 1980 SECA award, two National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships, a 1994 fellowship from the Guggenheim Foundation and a Flintridge Foundation award in 2002. Her paintings are held in museums and private collections internationally. Her work has been the subject of articles in major periodicals, including ARTnews, Artforum, and The New York Times.
