Negishi’s abstract paintings are marked by a dynamic blend of a variety of beautiful colors. His paintings capture various tones of color brought about by the subtle balance between black and other hues. He explores a profoundly spatial style of painting, describing it as the painting of colored space. This type of painting represents a layer of one color overlapping other layers of colordifferent in tone and depthand shows an aerial depth. For Negishi, infinity stretches on in a vague space of color.
Negishi got the original idea for this style of painting when viewing terraced farms in the Andes in Peru.
The integrated structure of horizontal, vertical and recessed axes seen in terraced fields transformed his painting into animate colors and multi-dimensional space.
Negishi states, “In watching the ever-changing mists and clouds rising about the mountains, I can lose all sense of time. In my paintings also, change is ever-present. From moment to moment, a different emotion is revealed. Catching hold of the delicate balance of these emotions as they appear, I attempt to bring out a condensed expression of these brief moments.”
